Announcing My Upcoming Book: The Unintentional Interim

The day I received word that my latest book query had been accepted, I shared the news with my wife. When she asked what it was about, I replied that I was finally writing my Church Book.

Thus far, all my books have been about spirituality, prayer, and/or pop culture. But after a lifetime in and around the church, I hadn’t yet written a Church Book. That is, I hadn’t yet written a book focused on issues related specifically to pastoral ministry and congregational life.

But I can now share that I’ve signed with The Pilgrim Press to publish The Unintentional Interim. It will be a book about finding oneself doing transitional church work that one didn’t expect to be doing, and navigating these unexpected tasks while tending to one’s own spirit. It will be a book about how all people in ministry actually are doing transitional work now, because we’re in a season of incredible shifts that have been hastened in our pandemic-informed times. It will be a book about disillusionment, discernment, faithfulness, community, self-care, and trusting God when it seems like everything else is in such overwhelming flux.

I don’t yet know much about the timeline for publication. I’ll certainly share more details along the way as things play out.

But yes, the Church Book is finally happening. Here we go.

Published by Jeff Nelson

Rev. Jeff Nelson serves as Minister for Ministerial Calls and Transitions as part of the MESA Team at the UCC national setting. He also serves as pastor of a small church in northeast Ohio. He is also a certified spiritual director in the tradition of Ignatius of Loyola. His latest book, The Unintentional Interim: Ministry in Times of Transition, released on April 15th, 2025.

  1. Thank you for writing on this topic. Settled calls in my experience have much transitional work involved. And as you suggest, it is hard to imagine a call these days that doesn’t involve such work. Blessings on you and this paperback (or hardcover) ministry!
