October 2026 Pop Culture Roundup

Books

  • The Calamities by Chuck Wendig – Families in a demonic soul-purchasing cult try to make sense of what has happened when a patriarch goes missing. I didn’t enjoy this as much as his previous books but it was still pretty good.
  • MOX by Jon Moxley – Pro wrestler Moxley shares a variety of his experiences from his life and career. Hearing him read it made this extra enjoyable.
  • Coffin Moon by Keith Rosson – A gritty vampire story set in the 1970s that explores family, grief, and guilt.
  • Morsel by Carter Keane – A story of getting lost in the southeast Ohio woods and finding horrors there. I liked the area references.

Movies

  • Evil Dead Burn – The third installment of the new trilogy sees the Deadites go after the family of the man who originally researched the Necronomicon. It’s as creepy and gory as I expected.
  • This Is Not a Test – A group of teens try to survive a zombie outbreak. And they’re the fast running kind of zombies. It was pretty good.
  • Spirit Halloween: The Movie – Four kids get trapped in a haunted Spirit Halloween store. It’s low-rent and silly, just as I expected.
  • Late Night With the Devil – A “found footage” movie about a 1970s talk show episode during which they summon a demon. Cool concept, got weird near the end.
  • Hallowarrior – A Halloween-obsessed apocalypse survivor has to fend off a home invasion. It’s like a creepy screwed-up version of Home Alone.

TV Shows

  • Ted Lasso – Ted returns to the UK to coach a new AFC Richmond women’s team. The show has as much humor and heart as ever. My one gripe is whatever Coach Beard was doing all season.
  • Lanterns – Hal Jordan and John Stewart investigate an alien case in a small town. I was glad to see one of my favorite DC heroes get a proper screen treatment.
  • Lucky – After a job gone wrong, a con artist has to evade the mob and the feds. I’ve enjoyed Anya Taylor Joy in everything I’ve seen her in.

Albums (favorites in bold)

  • Hayley Williams, Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party
  • Imminence, Axis Mundi
  • Aya Thorn, Pretty Poison
  • Bad Omens, Finding God Before God Finds Me
  • IKINA, Valkyria
  • Reverya, Affliction In Bloom
  • Motionless In White, Decades
  • Marian Hill, ACT TWO
