Luna’s Villanelle

You came to us, curled tightly on the floor,
A shaggy roll, shaking, small, and flat
As if movement would subject you to more

Cruelty that you had known and absorbed into your core,
Your soul’s worth diminished to only that
Which you could birth, the profit they could score

Thanks to your body and all that it could store
Inside against your will, your belly fat
With those who would be properly adored.

I took time to love you, my patience bore
Fruit over time, as finally you sat
Next to me, opening the heart’s door

Little by little, no rush, as it was sore
From what came prior, the small regard they had
About your spirit and the message that bore

Within you, a devastating lore
That left you feeling lonely, lost, and sad
Now changed to contentment heard in your gentle snore.
Where once you were contained, so now you may finally soar.
