Now that my first novel, Mirrobius, has been released into the world, here are answers to what I think could be the most common questions about it.
Where can I find this book? It’s available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Apple Books, and Smashwords, among other places.
What’s your “elevator pitch” summary of the story? A force called The Defenders now protect and serve the populace, with the use of magic gems that give them special powers. Some of them are assigned to investigate a series of abductions that might include one Defender agent’s brother. Along the way, the team has to work with the galaxy’s most influential technology company and encounters a few other shady characters who might be involved.
Why’d you write a novel? First, why not? Second, I’ve had the idea for this story for over a year, and certain elements included in the book actually go back to stuff I imagined as a kid, influenced by ’80s and ’90s action cartoons and comic books. This is me finally committing to writing it. Third, I thought it’d be fun and I wanted to try it (another way of saying “why not?”).
Who’s the target audience for this book, and what age range is it appropriate for? It’s a science fiction/fantasy story, so I’d hope that people who enjoy that genre would check it out. There are also a few elements that could be considered borderline horror, although they’re relatively tame. It would be fine for anyone age 13 and up, as there is some swearing, violence, innuendo, and alcohol use.
OMG SWEARING, VIOLENCE, INNUENDO, AND ALCOHOL USE?! Sigh…yes. If you can’t handle it, don’t read it.
Despite that and even though it’s a novel, are there spiritual themes in this book? My background was bound to have an influence on how the plot develops and what the characters do, but it’s more subtle, natural, and interwoven. This is NOT a “Christian fiction” book. And this story was as influenced by my experiences in martial arts–which I’ve always considered spiritual as well, just in a different way–as it was by my theological education.
Why’d you self-publish this instead of pitching it to a traditional publisher? I recently explained this already, but the short answer is that I didn’t want to sit around waiting and hoping for gatekeepers to accept it, let alone endure the long publishing process. I don’t mind going through all that for my nonfiction books, but not for this.
Who designed the cover, and was A.I. used at all? I did, and absolutely not.
Are you planning to write any more novels? I have ideas for 2-3 more stories for these same characters, so yes.
Where can I keep up with news about your writing besides this blog? I have a monthly author newsletter, and I’m on Facebook, Instagram, and a few Xitter alternatives.
Any plans for a launch party/reading? I’ll talk about it on the podcast for sure. Besides that, I don’t know yet.
Don’t you have other books besides this one? Why yes, yes I do. Find them all here.
